A product page should support an informed purchase and reduce avoidable returns. Search visibility is a useful result of accurate product information, but the primary task is helping a real customer understand the item, total cost and suitability.
In brief: Optimise the decision, not just the product title.
Provide complete product evidence
Product-page content
- Specific title and identifier
- Am I viewing the correct item?
- Original description
- What is it, who is it for and what are its limits?
- Images or video
- What does it look like at a useful scale?
- Variants and availability
- Can I select the correct version?
- Price and delivery context
- What will I pay and when will it arrive?
- Returns, warranty or cancellation
- What happens if it is unsuitable or faulty?
Avoid catalogue duplication
Manufacturer descriptions repeated across many shops add little value and may not answer local questions. Add measurements, compatibility, care, usage examples, real photography and support information that the seller can verify.
Measure the right failures
- Variant-selection errors.
- Questions repeatedly asked before purchase.
- Returns caused by size, compatibility or unclear photographs.
- Out-of-stock landings with no useful alternative.
- Mobile exits before delivery information or add-to-basket.
What good looks like
Ask a tester to choose the correct variant, calculate the likely total and explain the return route without opening another page or contacting support.
Where businesses get caught out
Product pages are often “optimised” by adding keywords and promotional copy while leaving measurements, compatibility, delivery and return information unclear. This may increase visits but also increases support contacts, abandoned baskets and avoidable returns.
Operational records
- Product specification source
- Image rights and alt decisions
- Variant and compatibility rules
- Return-reason analysis
- Page update and stock owner
Start with this
Choose the product with the highest return or pre-sale question rate. Rewrite its page around those real causes and compare the next month of enquiries and returns.
