Test control and portability

Ask what happens if the current supplier or platform is no longer suitable. You should know:

whether the business controls the domain account;
whether website content and data can be exported;
whether custom design or code can be transferred;
which functions depend on paid third-party services;
whether email is tied to the same supplier;
what assistance is available during migration;
what cannot be moved and would need rebuilding.

Portability is not absolute. A hosted builder may allow content export but not reproduce its visual layout elsewhere. A bespoke build may be technically portable but expensive for another developer to understand. The aim is to understand the limitation before committing.

Compare the three-year reality

Do not compare only the setup fee. Include:

platform or hosting subscriptions;
paid themes, extensions and licences;
maintenance and security;
transaction or booking fees;
content updates;
support and emergency repairs;
the owner's own time;
likely migration cost if the first choice is outgrown.

Use a small first release where appropriate

A clear first version is often safer than buying every possible feature before demand has been demonstrated. The first release can include the essential pages, primary enquiry or sales route, measurement and a maintainable platform. Later work should respond to real customer behaviour rather than assumptions.

This does not mean launching unfinished payment, privacy or security functions. “Small” should mean controlled scope, not incomplete quality.

What to check before you decide

Can the chosen route deliver the required functions without awkward workarounds?
Who is responsible for maintenance and recovery?
Can routine changes be made without unnecessary dependency?
Does the business control the domain, accounts and data?
Has the full ongoing cost been calculated?
Is there a credible exit route?

The next practical step is to shortlist no more than three build routes and score each one against the same requirements rather than comparing marketing pages.
