WordPress is an open-source content management system that can support anything from a straightforward service website to a busy online shop. Its main advantage is control: the business can choose its hosting, design, extensions and suppliers. The same freedom also creates responsibility for updates, backups, security and technical ownership.

Decide whether WordPress fits the operating model

The parts of a WordPress website

Core software

WordPress core provides publishing, users, media, navigation, blocks and administration. Keep it on a currently supported release rather than treating the installed version as permanent.

Theme

The theme controls presentation and can also affect editing patterns, accessibility and performance. A theme should be replaceable without losing the business content.

Plugins

Plugins add functions such as forms, SEO controls, bookings or e-commerce. Each plugin introduces another supplier, update cycle and possible compatibility issue.

Hosting and database

Self-hosted WordPress runs on a web server and stores most structured content and settings in a database. Hosting quality, resource limits, backups and support therefore influence reliability as much as the design does.

Ownership and maintenance are part of the platform choice

The business should control the domain, hosting account, administrator email, licences, payment accounts, analytics and backup access. Maintenance should have a named owner, a repeatable update process and a tested recovery route. WordPress is not difficult because it is open source; it becomes difficult when responsibility is unclear.

Questions a supplier should answer

Ask for a list of recurring costs and dependencies. “WordPress is free” describes the software licence, not the complete website. Hosting, premium extensions, monitoring, maintenance and specialist support may all be legitimate costs, but they should be visible before the project begins.
