When a theme is replaced, presentation will change. The business should not lose irreplaceable data or discover that important functions disappear without a migration plan.

Block themes, classic themes and builders

Modern WordPress supports block-based site editing as well as older theme approaches. Page builders add another editing layer. None is automatically best. Choose an approach that the actual content team can use and that a replacement supplier can maintain.

Test with real content

Demo sites are designed to flatter the theme. Build representative service pages, long headings, tables, forms, blog posts and mobile menus before committing. Test what happens when an image is missing, a title wraps to three lines or the content is longer than the demo.

A theme decision is also an operating decision

Record the theme supplier, licence, renewal date, support route, required companion plugins, custom code and update process. A visually impressive theme that nobody can safely update is not a professional choice.

Keyboard navigation and visible focus
Readable typography and sufficient contrast
No horizontal page overflow at small widths
Stable layout when images load
Editable header, footer and navigation
Compatible forms and required plugins
No console errors on critical pages
Documented licence and update source

Practical next step

Shortlist no more than three themes and build the same representative page in each. Choose from the tested result, not from the sales demo.

Theme replacement should be rehearsed

On staging, switch temporarily to a standard fallback theme and inspect the content. Posts, pages, products and core media should remain present. Layouts will change, but essential information should not vanish into proprietary widgets or shortcodes. Where content is locked to the current theme, document the migration work before approving further customisation.

Content patterns to test

A page with a very long service name and no hero photograph.
A pricing or comparison table on a narrow phone.
A form with validation errors and a success message.
A blog archive with mixed title lengths.
A page enlarged to 200% text size.
A missing or unusually tall featured image.

These ordinary cases reveal more about theme quality than a polished demonstration home page.
