Website problems are easier to solve when they are separated into planning, content, technical, search and operational causes. Rebuilding the whole site is rarely the best first response. A controlled diagnosis protects data, reduces unnecessary spending and makes it possible to verify whether a change actually worked.

Before changing anything

Record the exact symptom, page, device and time.
Check whether the problem affects everyone or one user.
Take a current backup before risky technical work.
Record recent changes to software, DNS, content or accounts.
Capture error messages and HTTP status codes where available.
Confirm who has authority to make production changes.

A vague report such as “the website is broken” encourages random fixes. “The contact form confirms submission on mobile, but no message has arrived in the business mailbox since 10:30” is actionable.

Planning and ownership mistakes

Many serious problems begin before launch:

no defined website objective;
no agreed page list or acceptance criteria;
content left until the end;
the supplier controls the domain or critical accounts;
renewals and licences are not documented;
no tested backup or rollback plan;
the business assumes maintenance is included indefinitely.

These are not cosmetic issues. They affect cost, security and the ability to recover.

Content and usability mistakes

pages describe the business without answering customer questions;
several pages repeat the same generic copy;
navigation uses internal terminology customers do not understand;
important conditions are hidden until the form or checkout;
buttons use vague labels such as “Learn more” when a clearer action is possible;
mobile layouts hide or crowd essential information;
forms ask for more information than the business needs.

Test with realistic tasks rather than asking whether the design “looks good”.

Technical and operational mistakes

software updates are applied without a backup or staging test;
expired domains, hosting, certificates or licences are missed;
all staff share one administrator account;
email delivery is never tested after DNS changes;
large images and third-party scripts are added without performance checks;
analytics is present but conversions are not tested;
the site has no named maintenance owner.

Use a controlled troubleshooting sequence

Confirm the symptom. Reproduce it and record the conditions.
Check status and recent changes. Look at provider status pages, logs and deployments.
Protect the current state. Back up before destructive work.
Isolate the layer. Domain, DNS, server, application, browser, third-party service or content.
Make the smallest safe change. Avoid changing several unrelated settings at once.
Retest the original task. A cleared error message is not enough if the user journey still fails.
Document the cause and prevention. Record what happened and what should change operationally.

When to escalate

Stop experimenting and obtain qualified help when there is evidence of a security incident, data loss, payment failure, widespread email disruption, repeated server errors or a change that could affect legal compliance. Preserve logs and backups rather than repeatedly overwriting the evidence.

What to check after a fix

Does the original task now work on more than one device?
Did the fix create a problem elsewhere?
Are forms, payments and notifications arriving correctly?
Does monitoring confirm stability over time?
Has the change and its reason been documented?
Is a preventive action assigned to someone?

The next practical step is to write the current problem as one reproducible sentence before changing any setting.
