A template can shorten the first design stage, but the real test is whether it supports your content, mobile layouts and future editing without fragile workarounds. A polished demonstration site is not evidence that the template fits a real business.
In brief: Choose a template by the hardest real page and the next editor’s workflow, not by the most impressive demonstration home page.
Test with real content first
- Your longest service name and navigation label.
- Real photographs in both portrait and landscape formats.
- A complete contact, booking or product form.
- Legal text, error messages and validation states.
- A page with a table, list and several heading levels.
- Mobile content at 320–430 CSS pixels.
Understand the levels of customisation
| Level | Benefit | Risk |
|---|---|---|
| Built-in style settings | Consistent and upgrade-safe | May not support every brand detail |
| Reusable sections or components | Faster editorial work | Can create repetitive pages if overused |
| Custom CSS or code | Precise exceptions | May break after platform or template changes |
| Third-party template/app | Extra capability | Separate support, privacy and renewal dependency |
Protect maintainability
Choose a small set of typography, spacing and component rules. Do not solve every content problem with a unique section. Ask whether an ordinary editor can add a new page without copying hidden settings or asking the original designer.
Check portability before investing
Builder templates normally cannot be transferred intact to another platform. Keep original images, copy, brand files, product data and URL records outside the builder so the business can rebuild without extracting everything from screenshots.
Acceptance test
Create three representative pages, test keyboard and mobile use, replace the demonstration content, and ask a different editor to make a change. The template is suitable only if the site remains coherent after real editing.
Example: the demonstration content hides a layout problem
A template looks balanced with six-word headings and identical stock images. Real service names wrap to three lines, staff photographs have mixed proportions and the legal page becomes unreadable. Testing the most awkward real content early is cheaper than forcing every future page into a design created for the demonstration.
What the business should retain
- Original brand and media files
- Typography and spacing rules
- Reusable component inventory
- Custom-code register
- Screenshots of representative mobile states
