An embedded map can help customers understand a real destination, but it should not replace a written address, directions or accessibility information. It also introduces an external service, technical configuration and potentially privacy considerations.

In brief: Use a map only when it improves a real arrival or coverage task.

Choose the right map approach

Map options

Link to Maps
Suitable use: Simple directions with minimal page weight; Consider: User leaves the site
Maps Embed API
Suitable use: Interactive place or directions view; Consider: API key, terms and iframe behaviour
Static map
Suitable use: Lightweight location illustration; Consider: Quotas, pricing and accessible text alternative
Custom map application
Suitable use: Multiple locations or specialist interaction; Consider: Development, accessibility, cost and maintenance

Configure safely

  • Use a business-controlled Google Cloud project if an API key is needed.
  • Restrict keys to the required API and authorised website.
  • Do not expose unnecessary customer or internal location data.
  • Provide the address and directions as normal text.
  • Test keyboard, mobile, zoom and map failure states.

Keep operational data consistent

The embedded place, website contact page and Google Business Profile should identify the same genuine location. A map should not be used to imply a staffed office where the business does not receive customers.

What good looks like

Disable the map temporarily. A customer should still be able to understand the address, access arrangements and alternative contact route.

A common way this goes wrong

A map embed is sometimes copied from a personal account or configured with an unrestricted API key. It can point to the wrong entrance, expose a key for wider abuse or stop loading when billing and ownership are unclear. Users with the map blocked may receive no directions at all.

Operational records

  • Cloud project and API-key owner
  • Key restrictions and enabled APIs
  • Correct place ID or coordinates
  • Written directions and accessibility alternative
  • Map failure and privacy test

Start with this

Open the page with third-party content blocked and on keyboard-only navigation. Confirm that location, directions and contact remain usable without interacting with the map.

Keep the decision under your control

Retain the relevant accounts, source material, supplier terms and recovery information. Recheck changing prices, interfaces and rules before acting.
