A local-business checklist should verify the complete journey from discovery to contact or visit. It is not enough for the business name and town to appear in the title if hours, location, service area or response processes are unreliable.

In brief: Check consistency, eligibility, mobile action and real operational ownership.

Identity and location

  • Use the real-world trading name consistently.
  • Show a customer-facing address only when customers can actually visit it.
  • Describe a service area honestly without presenting virtual offices as branches.
  • Keep company and privacy disclosures accessible.

Customer action

  • Telephone links work on mobile.
  • Forms deliver to a monitored queue and send an acknowledgement.
  • Booking links show current services, timezone and cancellation rules.
  • Directions include access, parking or arrival details where useful.
  • Opening hours include exceptional dates and a last-reviewed owner.

What good looks like

Have someone outside the business determine whether they are eligible, when they can act and how to reach the right person. Correct every point of hesitation.

The most common weak point

Local optimisation fails when marketing owns the website while operations owns the real information. A moved entrance, changed telephone number or temporary closure reaches staff but not public profiles. The inconsistency is often discovered through a negative review rather than monitoring.

What the business should retain

  • Local information master sheet
  • Profile access and ownership list
  • Hours and exception change log
  • Review response and moderation policy
  • Mobile enquiry test log

First implementation step

Assign a quarterly “mystery customer” test: find the business from search, verify eligibility, call or book and arrive using only published information. Record and fix every discrepancy.

Keep the decision under your control

Retain the relevant accounts, source material, supplier terms and recovery information. Recheck changing prices, interfaces and rules before acting.
