Set up Search Console with business-controlled ownership and a verification method that will survive a change of developer. A Domain property is usually the strongest starting point because it covers protocols and subdomains.

In brief: Use DNS verification and retain ownership inside the business.

Prepare access

  • Use a named business Google account, not a shared personal login.
  • Confirm access to DNS for the domain.
  • Record the people who should be owners and users.
  • Know the preferred public hostname and sitemap URL.

Set up the property

  1. Open Search Console and add a Domain property for the root domain.
  2. Copy the verification TXT record exactly into DNS.
  3. Wait for DNS publication and complete verification.
  4. Add at least one second trusted owner.
  5. Submit the canonical sitemap URL.
  6. Inspect the homepage and several representative pages.

Permission model

Suggested access
PersonAccessReason
Business owner or internal administratorOwnerRetains control when suppliers change
SEO or developer responsible for diagnosisFull user or owner only when justifiedNeeds reporting and inspection tools
Reporting-only colleagueRestricted userReduces unnecessary control
Former supplierRemove promptlyLimits ongoing access risk

Verify the setup

Confirm that the property includes the intended hostname, ownership survives sign-out, sitemap processing has started and URL Inspection can test a live page. Record the property and DNS method in the website ownership register.

Common mistake

Creating only a URL-prefix property can omit HTTPS, www or subdomains. It can still be useful for a specific section, but it should be deliberate.

Common failure pattern

Verification is sometimes completed through an agency-owned account or temporary HTML file that later disappears. DNS verification under a business-controlled account is usually more durable.

Completion evidence

  • Screenshot or record of verified Domain property.
  • Two trusted business owners.
  • Working sitemap submission.
  • Successful inspection of representative page types.

Next practical step

Complete DNS verification under a business account, add a second trusted owner and record the property in the ownership register. Do not leave this until after an agency or developer has launched the site.

Sources and date checked

Search, product and regulatory information was checked against the following primary sources. Interfaces and policies can change, so recheck operational details before acting. Date checked: 21 July 2026.

Keep the decision under your control

Retain the relevant accounts, source material, supplier terms and recovery information. Recheck changing prices, interfaces and rules before acting.
