Local citations are references to a business name, address, phone number or website on other services. A small number of accurate, relevant listings can help customers and support trust; mass submission to hundreds of low-quality directories creates maintenance work and little value.

In brief: Maintain a small, controlled set of useful listings rather than chasing directory volume.

Build a master business record

  • Exact trading name and any registered-company distinction.
  • Customer-facing address or service-area wording.
  • Primary phone and tracked numbers with documented ownership.
  • Canonical website URL.
  • Opening hours and category descriptions.
  • Company number or professional registration where relevant.

Prioritise directory types

Citation priorities

Primary profile
Examples: Google Business Profile; Reason: Major customer discovery and map presence
Official or professional register
Examples: Companies House or regulated-industry register where applicable; Reason: Verifiable identity
Relevant trade association
Examples: Recognised membership directory; Reason: Audience and professional context
Major general directory
Examples: Established UK directory with real users; Reason: Additional discovery
Local chamber or community site
Examples: Genuine local organisation; Reason: Local relevance

Audit before adding more

  1. Search the business name, old names, address and phone.
  2. Claim important existing profiles.
  3. Correct duplicates and closed-location records.
  4. Record login, owner, URL and last review date.
  5. Add only directories that serve a real audience or verification purpose.

Avoid exact-match obsession

Minor formatting differences are not a reason for panic. Correct material inconsistencies that could mislead customers: old address, wrong number, duplicate location or outdated hours.

What good looks like

Every retained listing is accurate, useful, controlled by the business and included in an access register.

A common way this goes wrong

Bulk directory services can create profiles the business cannot later edit or remove. Each new listing should justify its audience and be entered in the ownership register.

Directory register

  • Listing URL and purpose.
  • Business owner and login method.
  • Last accuracy check.
  • Duplicate, closure and correction status.

First implementation step

Create a controlled register of existing listings and correct material errors before adding new directories. Retain only profiles with a real audience, verification role or customer benefit.

Sources and date checked

Search, product and regulatory information was checked against the following primary sources. Interfaces and policies can change, so recheck operational details before acting. Date checked: 21 July 2026.

Keep the decision under your control

Retain the relevant accounts, source material, supplier terms and recovery information. Recheck changing prices, interfaces and rules before acting.
