A retail-shop website may support visits, reservations, click-and-collect or full online sales. The design should make the relationship between physical stock, online stock, location information and customer support explicit.
In brief: Build around the real customer journey and the staff process that supports it.
Priority customer journeys
| Customer need | Website response | Operational owner |
|---|---|---|
| Do you stock what I need? | Product or category information with availability context | Merchandising |
| Can I visit or collect? | Location, hours, accessibility and collection rules | Store manager |
| Can I buy online? | Clear checkout, delivery and returns | E-commerce team |
| What happens if stock is wrong? | Contact and substitution or refund process | Customer service |
Minimum page set
- Store information and current opening hours.
- Product/category pages or a clear catalogue boundary.
- Delivery, collection and returns information.
- Contact and support routes.
- Privacy, cookies and legal disclosures.
Risks to design around
- Displaying live stock that is not reliably synchronised.
- Hidden delivery charges.
- Online promotions that staff cannot honour.
- Review widgets or social feeds that slow the page and cannot be moderated.
What good looks like
Run an in-stock order, an unavailable item, click-and-collect and a return. The website and staff should give the same answer at every step.
The most common weak point
Physical and online retail data often diverge. The site displays stock that was sold in store, click-and-collect hours do not match staffing or a promotion cannot be honoured at the till. Customers experience these as broken promises even when each individual system is technically working.
Evidence and records to preserve
- Stock-sync rules and exception process
- Store and collection hours
- Promotion source of truth
- Returns across channels
- Order and customer export instructions
What to do now
Choose one product and trace its price, stock and promotional status through the till, website, collection process and customer-service script. Resolve every inconsistency.

Keep the decision under your control
Retain the relevant accounts, source material, supplier terms and recovery information. Recheck changing prices, interfaces and rules before acting.
